Walking Dead Men

People say this is a lost and dying world.  For the most part, that may be true.  Creation has been groaning since the Fall (cf. Romans 8:22).

I might also suggest that it would be appropriate to say this is a lost and dead world.  Humanity is dead spiritually.  They are lost and without God in the world.  They are permanently separated from God apart from Christ.  They are walking dead men.

And they do not know it.  Dead men don’t know things like that.

I can remember so vividly when I first truly realized this truth.  I was talking to a young lady in my office who was having some personal problems.  Our conversation got around to the Gospel, and I tried in several different ways to help her understand the truth of God’s Word.  No matter how creative or cunning I was, she just sat there staring blankly at me.  She did not understand.  She was a walking dead person unable to be resuscitated by anything I could do.

There are those like that young lady who have not yet had their eyes opened and are walking about spiritually dead.  I was once a walking dead man.

It almost overwhelms me to think about it. To see a walking dead-man has to be one of the most heart-breaking things a follower of Christ can observe in this world.  I cannot imagine not knowing Christ.  I cannot imagine not being spiritually alive in Christ.  God is in His mercy opened my eyes so that I might know Him.

The beauty of Good Friday is that it reminds us that Christ died once for all for walking dead people.  He willingly laid down His life so that dead men could be made alive.  He was and is the final atoning sacrifice for us who were dead in our trespasses and sins.

But He didn’t just die.  He rose again.  He rose into life.  He rose to overcome death and sin.  Because Christ died and rose again, I am alive.  By grace I have been saved through faith which God gave me, unmerited by me in any way (cf. Ephesians 2:8)!  I am no longer a walking dead man.  I am no longer under the wrath of God.  I am no longer dead to God.  I am spiritually alive in Christ.  I can know God and praise God.  I can follow His Word.  Oh what a glorious truth!

Praise be to God for resuscitating walking dead men and making them spiritually alive in Christ!!
