Not alone but lonely

Many years ago I was talking to a close friend who had been married for some time.  I was single, and I was convinced she did not understand what it meant to be lonely.  After all, she was married!  She said something very profound to me.

“I may not be alone, but that does not mean I’m not lonely.”

I thought about that for a long time.  Just because you may have people all around you, does not mean that you do not ever feel lonely.

How often do you feel lonely?

God created us to be in relationship with others, and most importantly, He created us to be in relationship with Him.

Unfortunately, with the advent of all this online stuff, more and more people are connecting with people all over the world, yet they feel lonely.  They communicate every day with people, yet they still feel lonely.  What people know about them is generally on a superficial level.  They do not feel known.  They feel that no one is truly interested in them to the core of who they are.

Have you ever felt that way?

I know I have.

It can be very easy to feel like a lost soul who nobody cares about.  I think that a lot of people have been told for years they are nothing more than animals without a purpose or a reason for existence.  This just is not so!

God created you.  He created you in His image (cf. Genesis 1).  He created you for His purpose.  He created you to bring glory to Him (cf. Isaiah 43:7).  You are not alone, and you do not need to feel lonely.  There is One who truly knows you; One who truly cares.  He sent His Son to die for you to save you from your sins.  He is with you always (cf. Matthew 28:20).

When you are feeling lonely, remember that you were created for a purpose.  Your purpose is to glorify God in whatever you do.  “Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind” (Ecclesiastes 12:13 NIV).

Feeling lonely?  Praise God for being who He is and who He created you to be.

Psalm 8

Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!

You have set your glory
in the heavens.
Through the praise of children and infants
you have established a stronghold against your enemies,
to silence the foe and the avenger.
When I consider your heavens,
the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars,
which you have set in place,
what is mankind that you are mindful of them,
human beings that you care for them?

You have made them a little lower than the angels
and crowned them with glory and honor.
You made them rulers over the works of your hands;
you put everything under their feet:
all flocks and herds,
and the animals of the wild,
the birds in the sky,
and the fish in the sea,
all that swim the paths of the seas.

Lord, our Lord,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
